Reporting to the Manager, GIS and Engineering Systems, this position performs technical mapping work in the preparation and maintenance of Municipal base and utility servicing maps, and in recording and computing related non-geographic data using CAD, GIS and Hansen software. The Mapping Technician 2 researches, compiles, analyzes, edits and enters spatial and attribute data from engineering design, inspector, and as-built drawings to produce engineering infrastructure assets within the corporate GIS system; prepares drawings and maps  of varying scale for a variety of engineering projects such as drainage, sewer, waterworks for engineering and planning purposes using various CAD/GIS software packages and tools; plots maps of various sizes, scales, and process requests for reports or spatial analysis to assist staff; makes recommendations regarding the development, alteration or improvement of workflow processes, procedures, or techniques to better meet Municipal requirements for asset management and CAD/GIS mapping standards and procedures. Other duties include QA/QC review of drawings and engineering infrastructure assets to ensure spatial accuracy and quality of data to adhere to engineering CAD/GIS standards and procedures. The Mapping Technician 2 acts as a project leader on assigned mapping, exercises considerable independence of judgement and action in performing assignments and discusses or refers more difficult or unusual problems to a supervisor who reviews work performance in terms of quality of services rendered and adherence to established practices and procedures. Performs related work as required.

 

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses in computerized mapping at an Institute of Technology, plus considerable related municipal mapping experience with strong cartographic experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Post-secondary training in engineering systems, including a focus on surveying, cartography, CAD and GIS are assets, along with experience working with ArcSDE geodatabases, relational databases, as-built drawings, Autodesk CAD software, FME, and Hansen Management System software, and scripting and programming language skills using FME or Python. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts is needed.
